Somali Government Plans Major Counteroffensive to Retake Moqokori and Mahaas from Al-Shabaab

The Somali government is preparing a major counteroffensive to retake the strategic districts of Moqokori and Mahaas in the Hiiraan region, recently captured by Al-Shabaab.

Coordination meetings are underway at the Lama-Galaay military camp in Beledweyne, led by former Hiiraan governor Ali Jeyte and involving Somali National Army units and Jubaland forces under the AUSSOM alliance.

Military officials confirmed that the operation aims to restore security and federal authority in central Somalia, where Al-Shabaab has increased its presence.

The districts, located along vital transit routes, are seen as critical to the government’s stabilization efforts.

The timing of the offensive remains undisclosed, but operations are expected to intensify soon.

Civilians in the area have voiced concerns over potential clashes and displacement as fighting escalates.

The overall security situation in central Somalia remains fragile amid ongoing conflict and humanitarian strain.
