The United States has officially suspended all financial support and direct assistance previously provided to the Somali National Army’s elite Danab unit — one of the country’s most capable, well-trained, and best-equipped forces.
The decision has already disrupted Danab’s operational capacity, as a significant portion of the unit’s budget historically depended on U.S. funding.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the suspension stems from political shifts in Washington and a new review of U.S.-funded security programs in Somalia.
In response, the Somali government moved swiftly to prevent a security vacuum.
Officials have drafted a plan for the federal government to fully assume responsibility for Danab’s funding, covering salaries, logistics, and parts of the training program.
