Bab al-Mandab Strait Faces Rising Shipping Risks Amid Security Threats

The Bab al-Mandab Strait is emerging as a major concern for global shipping as security threats have led to a sharp decline in vessel traffic. According to Kpler, ship movements through the strait fell by 34%, while traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dropped 31%, raising fears of disruptions at two of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

Recent threats by Yemen’s Houthi movement have prompted several commercial vessels to alter their routes. Analysts warn that prolonged instability could disrupt global energy supplies, increase shipping costs, and affect trade between Asia and Europe.

Ships avoiding the Red Sea route by sailing around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope face significantly longer journeys and an estimated $2 million in additional costs per voyage.
