Iran Announces Update on the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has said that the Strait of Hormuz can only be reopened through a solution reached via negotiations. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the strait within a week.

Speaking to journalists in New York City, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had not yet received an official response from Washington through mediators.

President Trump said Iran had made the proposal only because it was losing the war. However, Araghchi said Iran would not back down from the conditions attached to its proposal, including an end to all hostilities in the region, including the conflict in Lebanon, as well as the lifting of U.S. sanctions.

At the same time, Iranian officials warned ships not to use what they described as “unauthorized” routes to cross the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies.
