The U.S. state of California has officially recognized Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the two major Islamic holidays, after California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law.
Under the law, public schools and community colleges will close on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, in accordance with the existing holiday procedures.
The law also gives eligible state government employees the opportunity to take leave for the two Eid celebrations.
The move makes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha the first Islamic occasions to be officially recognized on California’s state holiday calendar.
