Egypt Hosts Summit With Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan to Address Horn of Africa and Red Sea Security Amid Rising Regional Tensions

The Egyptian Presidency said the meeting will expand regional consultations on shared concerns, especially security in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea corridor.

Participants include Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Sudanese Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The summit brings Sudan into the Egypt- Eritrea- Somalia alignment, formalised at an October 2024 meeting in Asmara.

It comes amid heightened tensions, including severed Ethiopia-Eritrea ties, expulsions between Cairo and AddisAbaba, and renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia. Leaders are expected to discuss Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb maritime security and cross-border crises.

The meeting coincides with the 8th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Summit and Alamein Africa Business Forum
