Faafi Police Station Commander Killed in Landmine Blast

The Kenyan police commander of the Faafi station and one of his bodyguards were killed when a landmine struck their vehicle while traveling on the road between the areas of Saretho and Bogyar, according to security officials.

The vehicle drove over a landmine that had been buried in the road; following the explosion, various security units—including Kenyan counter-terrorism forces, mine-clearing teams, and others—arrived at the scene.

Kenyan security officials blamed Al-Shabaab for the blast and vowed to pursue those responsible or anyone with knowledge of the incident.

The road where the explosion occurred has previously been the site of similar landmine attacks and ambushes carried out by Kenyan members of Al-Shabaab; some of these individuals have been captured, while others managed to escape security forces conducting planned operations in the area.
