Federal Government to Submit Members for 2027 Election Process Committee to International Community Today

The Federal Government of Somalia is expected to submit the names of its representatives for the 2027 election technical committee to the international community today; the opposition and civil society are also expected to send their respective representatives.

The members submitted by the government will participate in decision-making regarding the country’s 2027 elections, a process based on discussions held between the international community, the government, and the opposition.

Although the government and the opposition have not yet reached a consensus on the election model, these committee members will focus on establishing a unified electoral framework and facilitating deliberations between representatives from both sides.

The Federal Government is expected to nominate three members, while the opposition—comprising various factions—will submit its own representatives; a member from civil society will also be included to ensure an odd number of total members.

Meanwhile, the President of the Federal Government of Somalia is expected to announce directly that the country is heading toward elections; President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will speak about these elections in detail.

The international community has held mediation meetings with officials from both the Federal Government and the opposition to establish the country’s electoral process; it was ultimately decided that each side would appoint members to a technical committee.

Federal Government leaders have advocated for a public election, citing the elections held in the Banadir region and the Southwest, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle regional states as precedents.

The opposition is divided on this issue: some support a public election managed by a joint committee, while others prefer an indirect election—a disagreement that necessitated the formation of the technical committee.
