The United States has taken steps to support Egypt, removing, for the first time since 1980, all conditions attached to the military and economic aid it provides to Egypt, which exceeds $1.3 billion annually.
The U.S. military and economic assistance to Egypt began after Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. More than $320 million of the $1.3 billion in annual U.S. aid had been subject to conditions, including human rights requirements and other issues.
Egypt will now receive this aid and military assistance from the United States without conditions. The U.S. said the decision was based on Egypt’s role in addressing the situation in the Middle East during the Iran war.
