Yemeni Forces Say They Carried Out Airstrikes on Houthi Positions in Taiz

A spokesperson for the Yemeni military said that the country’s fighter jets carried out 20 airstrikes today. The spokesperson said the strikes targeted military positions, combat vehicles, and military equipment belonging to the Houthis in the city of Taiz.

The attacks came as the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthi group reached one of its most serious levels since a UN-backed ceasefire agreement was implemented in 2022. The ceasefire had halted attacks by both sides.

If the Houthis take control of Taiz, a city in southern Yemen, they could expand their influence over the Red Sea and potentially gain easier access to the port city of Aden, where Yemen’s government is based.

The ongoing fighting has forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

The conflict could also change control over different parts of Yemen, potentially affecting shipping routes in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
