Somali Government Implements Order Affecting Flights Between Mogadishu and Garowe

The Federal Government of Somalia has today implemented an order requiring anyone traveling on domestic flights within the country to carry a National Identification Card.

The Federal Government said the measure is intended to strengthen national security and monitor the movement of Somali citizens.
According to informed sources, the order has affected flights between Mogadishu and Garowe, with some flights scheduled for today reportedly being cancelled.

The development comes as a dispute remains between the Federal Government and the Puntland administration over the implementation of national identification services.

Puntland had previously opposed the National Identification and Registration Authority opening an office in areas under its administration, creating difficulties for residents seeking access to national identification services.

The Federal Government had previously implemented a similar requirement for passengers traveling on international flights, requiring them to carry a National Identification Card.
